Whitby & District Astronomical Society was established in 1997, since when Members have given regular Star Parties to local people and visitors, on Whitby's West Cliff during summer, the Bruce Observatory at Whitby School during the rest of the year, as well as - on invitation - to schools, and local groups in Whitby and its surrounding villages.
The group organises regular trips to events, conferences and astro-physics related projects; arranges talks and lectures in Whitby; holds a monthly meeting from Autumn through Spring; and comes in out of the cold once a year for what has become a regular Christmas Party.
The Society President, Secretary, Chairman and Major General, Mark Dawson, writes a regular column in the Whitby Gazette and the Whitby Gazette On-line; and regularly fields questions about astronomy, telescopes, and people worried they've been chased over the moors by UFOs.
