Westerdale Event 2024

Our annual visit to Westerdale will be later in the month this year - Friday October 25th starting from 19:30hrs, finishing no later than 21:45hrs.  As usual the venue will be Westerdale Village Hall. Dependant on the weather, an indoor presentation may precede observations outside, the usual format, but should conditions allow observations from the start, this will be ‘plan A’.  The last few years have been favourable, clear skies and dark skies and if we are fortunate again it should be an excellent evening.  Hopefully, some familiar faces will be attending.  Refreshments will be available inside the village hall, (most welcome if conditions are chilly outside as they were two years ago). Members able to assist please contact Mark Dawson, we 'envisage' getting there for 7pm, setting off from Whitby around 6:30pm,  as somehow or other we usually end up making a wrong turn!

Whitby Youth Hostel Events

Following several successful events hosted at Whitby Youth Hostel in recent years (often not even outside, or the ones Mark where remembered to bring the eyepieces!), we shall be returning twice this autumn.  The first event is on Sunday October 27th, starting from 7pm, returning on Friday, November 1st, again at 7pm.  Both events are scheduled to finish around 9pm give or take.   

These events are amongst numerous being publicised by Danby Lodge under the NYMNP Dark Sky events umbrella. Weather permitting. 

A similar format will be adopted to that of the previous visits i.e. a short introductory talk, a ‘Star Walk’, observations (if possible) and a closing presentation. The outside aspect will undoubtedly be subject to weather considerations, and possibly a light show, certainly Whitby Abbey will be ghoulishly lit for Halloween.  Members wishing to assist please contact Mark.

Finally, we have an event at West Cliff Primary School on Thursday Oct 24th. It is due to start at 6:30pm.  Mark will be in touch with details or change of plan.
