Westerdale

Our annual visit to Westerdale will this year go ahead on Friday October 14th, a little later than previous years. Starting from 19:00hrs, the venue will be the village hall and car park in Westerdale village itself, finishing no later than 21:30hrs. Dependant on the weather, some kind of indoor presentation may preceed observations outside, the usual format, but if conditions are very clear from the start, the emphasis will be on observations only. It should be an excellent evening with the promise of dark skies and some familiar and friendly faces once again. Refreshments will be available from inside the village hall, (most welcome last year in the chilly conditions outside) Members able to assist please contact Mark D. 

Fox and Hounds

Then on Saturday October 22nd we have an exciting event at the Fox and Hounds - Ainthorpe - Danby. This is the venue for the 'Dark Skies-Warm Fires' weekend in February hosted by Colin and Vicky at the Fox & Hounds.

With no dark skies event at the Danby Moors Centre this October, Colin and Vicky will be hosting an 'Evening amongst the Stars' event from the Fox and Hounds, where, weather permitting WDAS members shall be setting up Scopes etc (and hopefully observing all that is on offer in the autumn night sky) from the rear stable area of the hotel. The Fox and Hounds will also be laying on warming winter snacks to help stave the chill off! The event starts from 19:00hrs finishing around 21:00hrs. It should be a cracking evening with the observing location, near the back of the Fox and Hounds being very dark and enjoys excellent all round viewing aspects that are not too exposed. Whitby Youth Hostel Event

Finally, on Oct 29th we shall be heading closer to home, the Whitby Youth Hostel, for an event being organised by the Hostel and marketed by themselves and Danby Moors Centre. Its's another 19:00hrs kick off time, finishing at 21:00hrs. 

We have actually hosted star party events from the Youth Hostel on several occasions, not to mention utilising the front drive approach area for numerous visiting schools events. As usual, if the weather is not suitable for outdoor activities, an indoor plan B will be offered. There are several good sized rooms within the Hostel which lend themselves nicely for this purpose. A scale solar system demo will also be a preferred option if conditions allow, which could be carried out either in the YH gardens to the rear, or along the approach drive. The event should be very atmospheric, being half term Whitby Abbey will be illuminated 'Halloween' fashion. Should be an interesting evening!
