Lythe Primary School Event

Our first event of the New Year takes place just a day after the January society meeting (10th) at Lythe Primary School on Wednesday 11th from 6:30pm. We have held Star Party events at the School in the past, indeed one of our first outreach events was held there many years ago, so it's nice to return.

Lythe Primary School in Lythe Village.

The format will be dictated by weather conditions - if it's OK to observe outside, we will, otherwise plan B will be an indoor presentation. Plans will be discussed and finalised at the January meeting the day before. In any event we shall be looking to be on site by 6:15pm at the latest. Lythe School is in Lythe village - car park entrance is last turning on left before going out of village - toward Hinderwell, Staithes etc. Should 'snow' become an issue (who knows) the event may then be rescheduled.

Weather permitting February should be busy with events at the Fox and Hounds and Whitby Youth Hostel.

Our first event of the Dark sky festival period will be on February 10th at The Fox and Hounds Hotel-Ainthorpe, where hosts Colin and Vicky will once again be running their Dark Skies - Warm Fires weekend at the hotel. Hopefully conditions will be similar to last year, when finally we did experience the magnificence of the winter night sky outside.

Society members will be holding court inside the Hotel from 6:15pm, when proceedings commence. If skies are clear again, observations will be carried out from the beer garden or upper yard following the presentation. The event finishes around 9pm following dinner.  We shall be setting off from Whitby at 5:30pm. Further details will be included in the February notes.

Whitby Youth Hostel Event

Originally planned for Oct 29th 2022, staff shortages at the Hostel prevented this going ahead as scheduled, but will now take place on Wednesday February 15th from 7pm at the Youth Hostel. Organised by the Hostel and marketed by themselves and Danby Moors Centre, the event is looking to build on the popularity of the 'in-house' event run in 2021.

The rear of the Hostel - The observing location?

We have hosted star party events from the Youth Hostel on several occasions, not to mention utilising the front drive approach area for numerous visiting schools events. As usual, if the weather is not suitable for outdoor activities, an indoor plan B will be offered. There are several good sized rooms within the Hostel which lend themselves nicely for this purpose. A scale solar system demo will also be a preferred option if conditions allow, which could be carried out either in the YH gardens to the rear, or along the approach drive. More details next month.

Finally, were expecting to be on call again for the Dark Skies Festival event at the Danby Moors Centre during February half term, however due to a reshuffle and staffing shortages at the Centre, it looks as though there will be no event this year.
