We said last month exciting times could lie ahead. Well, such times took a huge step closer, as plans for the Observatory facility at the Danby Lodge have been passed by the Parks planning authority. The proposals did have the backing of North Yorkshire Moors Parks Authorities (NYMPA) but still had to be approved by their own department. The application process has been greatly assisted by Colin Simmons at the Fox and Hounds - Ainthorpe, near Danby, who is also an architect and expertly draughted the application, turning our initial designs into professional quality drawings suitable planning application submission.
With the award of Dark Sky Reserve status to the North Yorkshire Moors, NYMPA were keen to capitalise, aware of the growing Astro-tourism sector and the boost to the local economy that could bring. Following lobbying, negotiation, and groundwork by John McCue, WDAS representatives and others, the dream of an Observatory is one step closer to becoming reality.
With the planning application granted, the next phase can be implemented - that of funding, which is already being explored.
We are still a way-off yet, but once built, the WDAS (along with other parties) will host observing nights more regular than can be currently staged at the Lodge. We will keep you updated on further developments.
As John McCue says - Onwards and Upwards!
